    Bimini Day Cruise Itinerary

Planning Your Trip from Miami to the Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port

For travelers starting in the Miami area, getting to your Bimini day cruise requires a trip about 35 miles north to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The distance is typically between 25 to 35 miles, depending on your starting point in Miami. While this seems short, it’s crucial to plan carefully due to possible heavy traffic and logistics.

    • Cruise Departure Port: Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale 9:00 AM Sharp. Don’t be lates
    • Bahamas Destinations Served: Bimini and Freeport, Bahamas
    • For Guests in Miami: Please arrange your preferred transportation to and from the Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port.

Here is a detailed look at the transportation options available:

    1. Driving Your Own Vehicle or a Rental Car

This option offers the most flexibility, allowing you to travel on your own schedule.

    • Route:
The most direct route is typically I-95 North.
    • Travel Time:
Without traffic, the drive can take as little as 30-40 minutes.
Keep in mind, during the Miami morning rush hour (7:00 AM – 9:30 AM), you should budget 60 to 90 minutes or more to be safe.
    • For the Bimini and Freeport Day Cruise you need to get to Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port Everglades by 7:15 AM
      • if you mis the Bahamas Day Cruise, you will need to take a flight from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Bimini.
    • Parking:
Port Everglades has on-site parking garages and lots directly at the cruise terminals.
      • Cost:
Be prepared for parking fees, which are generally charged per calendar day. The standard rate is around $20 – $25 per day. Since the Bimini trip is a 1 day cruise, you will pay for one full day of parking.
      • Process:
Follow the signs for your specific cruise terminal, park in the designated garage, and then walk to the terminal for check-in.
    • Best For:
Families, groups, or anyone who prefers the convenience and control of having their own vehicle.

    2. Rideshare Services (Uber & Lyft)

Ridesharing is a very popular and convenient choice, especially for tourists without a car.

    • Process: You can request a ride directly from your hotel or location in Miami to your specific cruise terminal at Port Everglades.
    • Travel Time: The travel time is the same as driving (45-90 minutes), but you don’t have to worry about navigating or parking.
    • Cost: A standard one-way trip can range from $40 to $70. Be aware of “surge pricing” during peak times, which can significantly increase the fare.
    • Important Tip: When you book your ride, be sure to enter the specific terminal number your cruise departs from (e.g., “Terminal 21, Port Everglades”) to ensure your driver drops you off at the correct location.
    • Best For: Couples, solo travelers, and anyone who wants a hassle-free, direct drop-off at the terminal door.

    3. Pre-Booked Shuttle Services

Several private companies operate shared-ride shuttles between Miami hotels, Miami International Airport (MIA), and Port Everglades.

    • Process: These services must be booked in advance online or over the phone. They often pick up passengers from multiple locations, so the journey can be longer.
    • Travel Time: Expect a longer travel time of 60 to 90+ minutes to account for other passenger pickups.
    • Cost: This is often a very cost-effective option, typically ranging from $25 to $40 per person.
    • Best For: Budget-conscious solo travelers or groups who don’t mind a longer, shared journey.

    4. Taxi

Taxis are readily available but are generally the most expensive option.

    • Process: You can hail a taxi or have your hotel call one for you.
    • Travel Time: The travel time will be the same as driving or ridesharing (30-90 minutes).
    • Cost: A one-way metered fare will likely be in the range of $80 to $110.
    • Best For: Travelers who prefer traditional taxi services or do not use rideshare apps.

    Key Recommendations for Miami Travelers:

    • Leave Early: Regardless of your chosen transportation, leave Miami much earlier than you think you need to. South Florida traffic is notoriously unpredictable. For a cruise with a 9:00 AM departure, it is wise to leave Miami no later than 6:30 AM to account for traffic, parking/drop-off, and the check-in process.
    • Know Your Terminal: Port Everglades is a large, busy port. Check your cruise confirmation documents for the correct terminal number to avoid confusion upon arrival.
    • Check with the Cruise Line: Some day-cruise operators may offer their own bus transportation service from a central point in Miami for an additional fee. It is always worth checking their official website or calling customer service to see if this is an option.

Because the ship was completed after the end of the war, it was sold for scrap to Carl Fisher, one of the developers of Miami Beach. He used it briefly as a casino and then for oil storage, before it was purchased in 1924 by Bruce Bethell, a former British war captain and a liquor merchant out of Nassau. Bethell moved the ship to Bimini and used it used as a floating warehouse to store and distribute his liquor supply during the Prohibition Era, earning him notoriety as ‘Bimini’s Rum King’. During a hurricane in 1926, the ship ran aground and was damaged substantially. It was then used as a bombing target for training by U.S. fighter planes during World War II. However, after a group of five torpedo bombers mysteriously disappeared while returning from a run to the SS Sapona on December 5, 1945, all target practice on the SS Sapona stopped immediately.
